We finally made it to Staten Island.
It took some coordinating, and almost didn’t happen due to a week of oppressive heat in New York City, but July 11th suddenly looked OK, and we decided to jump on the ferry to check out some places.
The video tells the tale, but the summary is:
The Staten Island Ferry is always a nice ride, especially in the kind of good weather we’ve had this past week. The Staten Island Railroad is not a great ride, as it’s still using some of the oldest cars in the subway system. It’s slated to finally be upgraded this year.
One thing I didn’t realize and probably should have, is that the Railroad only runs every 30 minutes outside of peak commute times. That wasn’t a problem for our initial trip, but would have really slowed us down if we had used it as our primary transport. We called a car to get us from one pizza place to the next, and only returned to the train at the end.
The combination of heat and the amount of time it took us to get there and get around, meant that we only went to two places rather than the planned three. The third could actually be an expedition in itself that we’ll do at some point in the future when the weather is cooler and walking around is a more reasonable prospect.
